Sailing with the Spot satellite tracker17 Jun

Badalona-Vilanova sailing trip with “executive” stop at Port Vell

We spent the day sailling with the Jadic yesterday, carrying the Spot tracking device, with excellent results as the map below shows. Garbí wind (SW) with constant wind above 20 knots, reaching 27 at some moments of the journey. Sailing against the wind with two reefs on the main sail and self-turning genova. The sea condition was pretty rough, with short front waves at 1,5-2m.

And we had a great time!

The Unama (Gran Azul) on its way to Turkey15 Jun

We are glad to track yet again Cris and Jordi’s journeys, this time onboard the beautiful Catamaran Unama.

You can currently track via satellite their journey, at present at Sicilia.

We have followed their journeys in the Med, in the Atlantic French Coast, crossing the Atlantic in several occasions, and during months in the Caribbean, so we are truly happy that the can still enjoy their boating dream, this time in Turkey.

Cris and Jordi are proffessional Yacht masters, with many thousands of miles behind them, sometimes taking boats from their customers wherever owners want them to be. Some other times they are skippers for yachts in charter worldwide.

We will be soon creating an index of charter companies among our customers, so that you can directly contact these companies, if you want to enjoy these very special experiences, such as scuba diving, learning to sail, visiting remote countries, knowing people with similar curiosity, in a completely different way.

OpenCPN: a complete navigation PC software10 Jun

Congratulations again to the team that is developing the OpenCPN software.

This program is used to manage everything related to the navigation needs on board. We can connect a GPS, and install almost any format of navigational charts (vector or raster( and enjoy a simple and powerful tool. Is also free and open source.

Among the most interesting features we can highlight:

- AIS information display

- GRIB weather files reader

- Complete management of routes, waypoints, giving us indicators such as Bearing, Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), Distance to Goal (DTG), both as the total route or the leg we are sailing.

- The interface is very intuitive and fast, and although it is very well documented, there is no need to study a manual.

OpenCPN works for both PC, Linux and Mac, and really requires little power to operate at high speed, unlike most demanding programs such as MaxSea.

You can learn more and download it from here: http://www.opencpn.org/

Currently a beta is also available for the new version 2.1, with many additions and improvements.

Spot satellite messenger08 Jun

Among the satellite tracking devices we work with, you can find the spot satellite messenger.

When you purchase it from us, it is automatically integrated in our system so that you can choose at any time the websites and social networks where you want your location to show up.

You can see a description of this device down here:

- SPOT is the world’s first and only satellite messenger

- SPOT sends messages via satellite to e-mail adresses and cell phones

- Each message contains two things:

1. GPS coordinates

2. A link to a Google Map

- There are three modes of messaging:

1. 911. When the 911 button is pressed, a message is sent to our international 911 response center. The proper authorities are then dispatched to your location.

2. OK. The OK message sends an all is ok message to friends and family.

3. Help. The help button is designed to be used in non-life threatening situations. The people on your contact list are notified of your position and request for assistance.

There is also a tracking feature. Every 10 minutes for 24 hours, your position is plotted. With your permission, anyone with an Internet connection can monitor your progress. The tracking feature is also an excellent personal trip log that is great compliment to photos or journal entries.

Summer in the Balearic Islands04 Jun

It would be very interesting to analyze the impact of the boating tourism in the Balearic Islands.

In our satellite tracking webpage for boats, we regularly follow the frequent trips of our customers to the Balearic Islands, which significantly increases during the summer.

Besides, many Europeans choose the Balearics as the HQ for their boats. All this boats have to pay manteinance, equipment and mooring fees, that provide a significant flow of cash into the Islands.

Most of their owners are in tourist mode, so they spend on food, car rental and many others while staying in the Islands, and since their purchase power is medium to high, the impact of their stay is very significant.

Somebody should study whether the Islands suffer what economists call the dutch desease, i.e., the illness suffered by countries that specialize so much in a very succesful industry, that it stops the incentives or capacity to generate wealth in any other sectors.

In any case, the early recovery of countries such as Germany will surely have a positive impact in the economy of the Islands.

Satellite tracking for charter companies28 May

Charter companies often rent out their boats without a skipper.

If the customer is not an usual one, the charter company manager’s may have the doubt of whether the boats maybe used for means other than leisure boating.

For that reason Atlantic Source has developed the AtPosition satellite tracking service. From a private access, the charter company can track at all times the location of their fleet, and know a historic track of their positions.

Besides, AtPosition offers devices that can’t be jammed, like other GPRS devices, and besides they don’t need an external power supply, so it means “charter companies can be ahead of the bad guys!”.

The position can also be published in other websites, giving external publicity to your charter services, and giving an extra service to your customers by allowing their loved ones to track their journeys.

Don’t hesitate to contact us to know more.

They are installed permanently and it is the ideal solution if you just want to forget that you have a tracking solution onboard. Ideal for long distance boaters, long distance regattas or charter companies willing to monitor their fleet.

If you want a small autonomous device transmitting via satellite, ideal for short distance journeys or regattas needing satellite coverage, the Globalstar Smartone device is the perfect option where GPRS or AIS coverage does not exist.

And if what you are looking for is an autonomous device with semi-automatic transmission, low-cost transmission fees, that you can take with you in your car or when trekking, the spot messenger is an amazing solution:

Satellite tracking services21 May

Satellite tracking services are based on three main different stages:

- Manufacturers of transmitting hardware

- Telecom operator which manages a constellation of satellites in orbit

- Companies providing tracking services

Frequently, stages 1 and 2 of the service are an alliance of both kinds of companies, since each device is specially designed to work in each constellation.

Stage 3 is where our AtPosition service is. We access the raw data transmitted by the satellite transponders, and develop services customized for the needs of our customers.

Usually companies in stage 3 provide a very concrete service for a kind of customer. One of the things that we believe makes AtPosition different, is that we have agreements with different operators, such as Inmarsat, Globalstar and Iridium in order to provide the most customized service to our customers needs in any case, whether they are regatta competitors on the coast, on long journeys, globetrotters, etc.

For example, Iridium is very strong because of its very reliable satellite telephone service. Its constellation has 66 low orbiting satellites. Chances of finding 66 satellites are very good, and that’s why conversations are unlikely to suffer sudden cuts.

Inmarsat is very well known for its reliability in data transmission. The hardware that we sell with the Inmarsat service is completely programmable and can be set to transmit when certain events occur, such as when the boat leaves the harbour, or starts moving, so it saves a lot of money in transmission costs. But definitely its biggest advantage is that it is installed permanently and connected to the power supply, so no need to install batteries, and it transmits automatically, so you don’t need either to update your position manually by pressing a hardware button or similar.  It is ideal for long journeys, charter companies willing to control a fleet, or simply private owners willing to control remotely their boat.

Globalstar has a very broad range of products. They are in most cases autonomous, with their own batteries and you can even take them with you outside your boat. They are ideal for short journeys close or far from the coast and you can update your position by simply pressing a button. Besides, rates of tranmission can be sent more frequently.

It is thanks to these agreements with the most important satellite players that AtPosition is able to provide customized satellite services for every possible boater: regatta competitors, private owners, charter companies, long journeys, etc…

Location positions are sent from our hardware in our customer’s boats via satellite and shared with other websites so that overall satellite tracking gains the broadest diffusion and media impact for regatta organizers and sponsors. Users have at any time full control of their privacy and may allow individually the websites or social networks were they want their boats to show up.

Leisure boats19 May

Very interesting site on boating in barcos de recreo, a site in Spanish explaining diverse information on leisure boating.

It is especially interesting the article about preparing a globe sailing trip and particularly about “Expedición por la vida” an expedition organized by people from Barcelona.

We’ll talk to them, maybe they’ll be interested in letting their friends, family and followers track the development of their boat trip real time.

In any case we really hope them the very best! :)

Atposition interviewed in La Razón Spanish newspaper23 Mar

Summary in English of the article published in the weekly edition of La Razón.

Atlantic Source offers automatic satellite geolocation services especially designed for boats with an extremely easy installation procedure.

The idea originates from the need of boaters to share their trip with fleet managers, charter company customers or relatives of private owners willing to know the location of their loved ones while sailing around the world.

This initiative gave Atlantic Source’s founders the Bancaja Foundation Prize for Young Entrepreneurs.

The main difference with other services is that the device is programmed to transmit automatically with no need of any human intervention, and it can also be set to send other interesting information on board if you want to set fire alarms, water leak alarms, etc…

Atlantic Source expects many new web services in the near future around this technology.
